FORNAV File Service

C:\ file access from Business Central with the FORNAV File Service

The FORNAV File Service allows you to re-gain the ability to access your local drive from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Here are some concrete examples of how you can benefit:

  • Keep control over your data: When you store files locally, you have full control over your data without having to rely on a third-party service provider.
  • Retrieve data fast and effortlessly: Files stored locally typically have faster access times, keeping productivity high.
  • Streamline document management and increase efficiency You can work with files stored locally any time you need to. No more tedious workarounds or manual data entry.
  • Pay no additional costs: There is always a cost involved in storing your data online. The FORNAV File Service is a cost-effective solution that comes with no extra subscription costs. Instead, our File Service is included in the standard FORNAV subscription. If you already have FORNAV installed (version 7.2 or higher), you also automatically have access to the File Service.
  • Help ensure compliance: Storing data locally can help you comply with some local data privacy regulations and industry-specific compliance standards and it gives you full control over data security measures.
  • Keep your data secure The FORNAV File Service eliminates file security issues. It keeps your data secure by not opening outgoing ports, thereby removing firewall-related issues.

A significant competitive advantage

“FORNAV has been a game-changing tool for us, and we want to ensure that all our customers benefit from it. This is why we have decided to include FORNAV in all the BC implementation that we sell.”

Make Hybrid Cloud scenarios possible

FORNAV makes Hybrid Cloud scenarios possible by connecting Business Central cloud to OnPrem resources.
FORNAV Direct Print lets you print from local printers and FORNAV File Service lets you access your local C\: files from Business Central Cloud.

Attach local files to your sales documents

In FORNAV, you can attach files to, for instance, Customers, Items, or Orders. These files are attached as a link to a local or network drive, so they don’t take up database space in your Business Central solution. This allows for people outside of Business Central to have access to the files, such as product fact sheets, drawings, pictures, or similar.

No, since Microsoft’s decision to restrict local file drive access from Business Central, it is no longer possible to access files and programs stored locally from Business Central. Microsoft’s decision was made to improve security and maintain data integrity within the BC ecosystem.

Why is this an issue?

No, since Microsoft’s decision to restrict local file drive access from Business Central, it is no longer possible to access files and programs stored locally from Business Central.

Why not use Cloud storage?

For some companies, having fast and easy access to large files (or a large number of files) is business critical.

Of course, cloud storage is a possibility but one that can be difficult to handle or migrate to.

While cloud storage is convenient for many use cases, it’s not always the best fit for companies that rely on quick and reliable access to large files—or a high volume of smaller files. Downloading or syncing large files from cloud platforms can take time, especially when internet speeds vary or when files need to be accessed repeatedly throughout the day. This latency can disrupt workflows and lead to frustrating delays.

In addition, some cloud storage services charge based on data transfer or access frequency. For companies that need to open, transfer, or process large files regularly, these costs can add up quickly. In short, while cloud storage offers flexibility, it may not deliver the speed or cost-efficiency needed for business-critical file access.
