Working with the Max Image Size field

Where to find it: ForNAV Setup page → General section → Max Image Size

What it does

When a report includes images — such as a company logo or an item picture — those images are sent, along with the report data, to be rendered. Large, high-resolution images can make this data sizeable and can slow down report generation.

The Max Image Size field lets you set an upper limit, in bytes, of how large an individual image is allowed to be when a report is generated. If an image exceeds this limit, it is automatically scaled down before the report is produced. You don’t need to manually resize or compress your logos and pictures — Fornav handles it for you.

The default value is 0, meaning this feature is off until you set a limit.

How it behaves

  • If an image is smaller than the configured limit, it is used as-is — no changes are made.
  • If an image is larger than the limit, it is automatically shrunk in steps until it fits within the limit (or until it can’t be reduced any further).
  • PDF files attached as images (for example, an embedded PDF attachment) are never resized, since resizing doesn’t apply to PDF content.
  • Setting the value to 0 (or leaving it blank) turns this feature off — images are sent at their original size regardless of how large they are.

Known limitation

The scaling down of images uses the Business Central built-in image-scaling capability. In some cases this scaling can fail — for example, depending on the image format or how the image was originally stored. When this happens, the image is used in its original, unscaled format rather than being reduced in size.

When to adjust this field

  • Set a limit (for example, 1,048,576 bytes for 1 MB) if reports with images are slow to generate or if you want to keep report payloads small — for example, in environments with limited bandwidth.
  • Leave it at 0 if you need to preserve full image quality and size is not a concern, such as when high-resolution item images must be shown clearly on a document.

Availability

This setting is available with Business Central 24 and later. In earlier versions, this field does not appear and no automatic image resizing takes place.
