Controlling report language, format region, copies, and watermark with the Report Settings page

From Fornav 8.3.0.0, you can use the Report Settings page to override a report’s number of copies, the watermark, language, and (in Business Central 22 and later) the format region, without touching the report itself. You can apply a setting to one company or to every company, and its language/format region choice always takes priority over every other source of language on the report.

This article explains how to use the Report Settings page and — because language on a Fornav report can come from several places — exactly which source wins when more than one applies.

Opening the Report Settings page

  1. Open ForNAV Reports to see the list of Fornav reports.
  2. Drill into the report you want to configure, to open its ForNAV Report card.
  3. Click Report Settings. This opens the Report Settings list, already filtered to that report.

Fields

FieldDescription
Company NameThe company this override applies to. Leave this field blank if you want this override to apply to all companies. If both a company-specific and an all-companies setting exist for the same report, the company-specific one wins.
DescriptionA free-text description of the setting.
Number of CopiesThe default number of copies to print, overriding the report/company default.
Language SourceSpecifies where the report’s language comes from:
– Default – no override.
– Company Language – forces the company’s own default language, but the format region is unaffected.
– Manual Selection – forces both the Language Code and Format Region fields described below.
Language CodeThe application language code to force. Only used when the Language Source field is set to Manual Selection.
Format RegionThe language tag used for number, date, and currency formatting. Only used when the Language Source field is set to Manual Selection. This functionality is only available in Business Central 22 and later.
WatermarkSpecifies which watermark prints on the report:
– Default – uses the report’s own watermark type (Document, List Portrait, List Landscape, or Check).
– Choosing a specific type of watermark forces that watermark, regardless of the report’s own type.
– None – the watermark is removed.

Which language wins? The full precedence order

The language source of a Fornav report — and, from Business Central 22 and later, its format region — can come from up to four places. Fornav checks them in the following order, and the first one that applies wins:

  1. The Report Settings page. If a setting exists for the report (company-specific, or an all-companies row if there’s no company-specific one) with the Language Source field set to Company Language or Manual Selection, that language is used and nothing else is considered.
  2. The document’s own language (for supported reports, which are listed in the following section). When the Inherit Language Code option is set to True on the ForNAV Setup card (in the General section),  the report uses the language code — and, in BC22+, the format region — that is stored on the source record. This is typically the customer’s or vendor’s language, instead of the current user’s session language. The Inherit Language Code option is turned on by default, and when it applies it takes priority over the report limits and overrides in Business Central.
  3. Business Central’s own Report Limits and Settings page. If a user selected a different language for the report in Business Central, and the document’s own language (source 2 described previously) didn’t already decide the language, Fornav honors the selected language. This works out of the box on every standard Fornav report. If you have built a custom report, you must re-open it and save it in a current version of the Fornav Designer at least once before this works. This is because support for Business Central report limits and overrides depends on code that the Fornav Designer generates into the report.
  4. The current user’s session language and regional settings. If none of the previous three sources apply, then the report renders in whatever language and regional format the user is currently working in.

Because the Report Settings page is always the first language source that Fornav checks, it’s the reliable way to pin a specific customer-facing document to a fixed language and format, no matter who prints it, which customer it’s for, or what their Business Central session or Report Limits and Settings page specifies.

Note

To override the Format Region field, you must have Business Central 22 or later. In earlier versions, only the Language Code field is overridden — the regional number, date, and currency formatting always follows the current user’s session.

Reports that support document language

The Inherit Language Code option (in the General section, on the ForNAV Setup page) is the switch that turns document language on for the following reports. It’s on by default. When enabled, each report uses the language code — and, on BC22+, the associated format region — from the source noted, instead of the current user’s session language:

Report groupReportsSource of the language code
SalesOrder Confirmation, Sales Invoice, Credit Memo, Sales Quote, Sales Return Order, Blanket Sales Order, Draft Invoice, Pro Forma Invoice, Sales Shipment, Sales Return Receipt, Picking ListThe sales document’s own Language Code field.
PurchasePurchase Invoice, Purchase Order, Purchase Credit Memo, Purchase Quote, Purchase Return Order, Blanket Purchase Order, Purchase Receipt, Purchase Return ShipmentThe purchase document’s own Language Code field.
ServiceService Invoice, Service Order, Service Credit Memo, Service Quote, Service Contract Quote, Service Shipment, Service ContractThe service document’s own Language Code field.
FinanceReminder, Reminder Test, Finance Charge Memo, Finance Charge Memo Test, StatementFor Reminders and Finance Charge Memos: the document’s own Language Code field. For Statements: the customer’s Language Code field.
Swiss QRSwiss QR Invoice, Swiss QR Invoice Separate, Swiss QR Service InvoiceThe source document’s own Language Code field.

Note

The Swiss QR-Bill report also always renders in the source document’s language, but unconditionally — it isn’t affected by the Inherit Language Code setting.

Every other Fornav report — lists, labels, statistics, warehouse and transfer documents, and similar — always uses the current user’s session language and is unaffected by the Inherit Language Code setting. The settings specified on the ForNAV Report Settings page and on the Report Limits and Settings in Business Central still work normally on these reports.
